In 1579, Yasuke, a former slave from Mozambique, becomes the first black Samurai in history. A servant of Jesuit Priest Allesandro Valignano, Yasuke was granted Samurai status by Oba Nabunaga, the most powerful Daimyo in Japan and fought beside him until his death in battle.
